Let’s be honest. When you are working from home, you are going to need a few things. A dedicated working space will help you be more productive and avoid working from anywhere at any time confusion in your brain. So here are my three steps for creating the perfect home office.
Step 1 – Find The Perfect Spot
Preferable somewhere that has some light. My first office was just a corner in my bedroom but it was near the window and let me tell you the ability to stare out at the sea every once and awhile made it infinitely more enjoyable when I was struggling through growing my business. If you are not able to find somewhere with light, add a beautiful picture to help you enjoy the space even more.
Step 2 – Get the equipment you need
Let’s start with the basic list:
- A desk
- A comfortable chair
- A reliable computer
- Lighting for meetings
- A planner and journal
- A tablet with pencil
- Inspirational quotes
- A beautiful background for meetings
Start with what you can and you can always upgrade from there.
Step 3 – Make a schedule
I know I know. We want to get away from the 9 to 5. So why make a business that puts you back in a 9 to 5? Well I don’t want you to make a 9 to 5. I certainly don’t have one. But I do want you to find the rhythm that works for you. Personally, I work 3 to 4 days a week. I get in my office between 7 and 8. And I take a 3 hour lunch break. I’m always done by 7 pm. Sometimes I take an afternoon off. But I have 2 days dedicated to client calls and 2 days dedicated to admin, marketing, and client work. This means if I want to take a week off here or there or work 2 days a week one month, I can do it. I just have to be organized about it.
